Nest Wifi Point
The Nest Wifi Point has a novel UX language, that utilizes a bottom-facing light ring to create a glow on the surface the product is sitting on. The lights help a user understand the status of the device, both during set-up and everyday use.
I worked on the Product Design Engineering side to bring the concept of this unique UX feature to life.
Define brightness and visibility targets: How bright and spread out does the glow have to be to be noticeable and look good? At what angles is the lighting “readable”?
Define light guide architecture and assembly: Achieve visibility targets while keeping cost and complexity down
Collaborate with industrial design and UX to land on a feature that works for both aesthetic and performance
Make a LOT of prototypes to demo!
