Chromecast Remote

The Chromecast Remote released alongside the “Chromecast with Google TV” device. It was Google’s first Chromecast product offering with an on-screen interface, to allow users to browse services/apps. The remote was included in-box to allow navigation of the Google TV interface.

I owned the mechanical definition and design of the device, from the concept/design phase through the early prototyping builds. In that time, I worked closely with product managers, industrial design, and UX/HF to define the MANY physical interaction points of the remote.

Features I worked on include:

  • Every button! Defining the layout, feeling, materials, construction, etc of all 15 buttons.

  • Battery door mechanism: Creating a user-friendly, aesthetic, and mechanically robust battery chamber.

  • Indicator LED: creating an indicator that gives users the info they need, and is invisible when it’s not needed.

  • IR LED: Enable direct control of a user’s TV. Defining LED and lens requirements to enable TV control from reasonable angles and distances.

  • Cosmetic enclosures: mechanical design of housings to combine industrial design vision with mechanical architecture.

  • As the only “directly responsible individual” (DRI) on the Product Design Engineering side, I led the initial tooling release for every mechanical part + MCO definition of the PCB.
